Trivia

  • In Japanese mythology, a giant catfish or namazu is said to live underground and cause earthquakes. In the 19th century art genre called namazu-e, the god Takemikazuchi was often depicted riding atop the catfish to restrain it.
  • Their names are likely derived from the Japanese poet Sugawara no Michizane. According to a legend, Michizane once used his sword to defeat a giant catfish blocking the road in Chikushino, which caused the catfish to turn into stone.
